MORE INFORMATION

MESSAGE FROM THE HOST

It is our privilege and pleasure to host the SPUS 2019 meeting in Newport, Rhode Island in October. Newport, located on the southern part of Aquidneck Island, is a town with a rich history. It was an important port during colonial days and its safe harbor plus easy access to the open Atlantic made it attractive to fishermen, yachtsmen, and the US Navy. For many years, the America’s Cup races were held here. And in the early 20th century, it was the summer “playground” of the rich and famous who built summer “cottages” here. Now, thousands of tourists come to Newport each year to enjoy all it has to offer. We look forward to sharing its history and beauty with you.

Newport, RI

Newport draws visitors from the United States and abroad thanks to its colorful cultural, historical and scenic landscapes.  Visitors can enjoy coastal charm with beaches and sailing, Gilded Age elegance in the mansions along Bellevue Avenue, and culinary adventures at our many excellent restaurants all within a manageable size city.  Although 25,000 people reside in Newport year round, that number swells when as many as 4.5 million visitors come to the city each year.

ri-newport-viking-54.jpg

It is important that your room reservations be made before May 1, 2019, as beyond this date rooms that are not booked will be released.

This means that if you try to make a reservation after June 1, you would need to call the hotel directly and you would not be assured a room nor the reduced negotiated rate.

It is critical that all reservations be made through the SPUS contract (either on-line or by calling the toll-free number below) and specify SPUS meeting, as any unused rooms may be charged against us.

We have also negotiated the special group discounted rate for shoulder nights before or after the meeting up to 3 days each.

These, however, are not guaranteed and will be made available at the reduced rate only as rooms are available.  In other words, these rooms will not be reserved as part of the SPUS block.

Therefore, if you are considering staying at the hotel prior to October 3 or after October 5, you are strongly encouraged to make your reservations as soon as possible to assure that you have the extra room nights at the same negotiated reduced rate.

or call toll-free line at 1 (800) 556-7126

note: mention you are part of the SPUS meeting to receive the discounted rate

Where to Stay
DIRECTIONS

The two closest airports to the hotel are:

  •  Providence/TF Green Airport – PVD which is approximately 28 miles (30-40 minutes)

  •  Boston /Logan Airport – BOS which is approximately 74 miles (~90 minutes)

There are very limited flights from Europe directly into Providence/TF Green.   These would be on Norwegian Air and generally do not fly daily into Providence. An alternative approach would be to fly into a larger hub that has a direct connection to Providence such as Newark (New York area), Washington DC, Atlanta, Philadelphia, or Chicago.

A standard taxi from Providence/TF Green airport to the hotel typically run about $80-$90, however, Uber or Lyft would be about half that price.

Regarding transportation from Boston/Logan Airport to the Hotel Viking in Newport, there is a private service that the hotel recommends: “All Occasion Transportation”.  This can be arranged through the following number: 1-800-454-1380 or at www.alloccasionlimo.com.  This is rather expensive, about $250.00.   If, however, there is a group that arrives into Boston/Logan around the same time then the rate would be significantly cheaper.  Alternatively, car rental is an option as parking is available at the hotel, at a charge.  I will work on other options to arrange private transportation from Boston/Logan, about which I will keep you informed.

From Providence Area or T.F. Green Airport

27 MILES

Take I-95 South to Route 4 (Exit 9 is a left-lane exit). Follow Route 4 South, which becomes Route 1 South. Take exit marked Route 138 East to the Jamestown/Verrazano Bridge. Cross over the bridge and you'll come to the Newport Claiborne Pell Bridge ($4.00 toll each way to cross). Take the first exit off the Pell Bridge (sign for “Scenic Newport.”). At the base of the exit ramp, turn right onto Farewell Street. Follow to the second traffic light, and bear left. At the stop sign, bear right onto Thames Street. At the first traffic light, turn left onto Touro Street. Follow up the hill to the second traffic light. Turn right into the Hotel Viking's driveway at One Bellevue Avenue.

From Boston / Logan Airport (BOS)

70 MILES

Follow Route 93 South to Route 24 South which merges and becomes Route 114 South (West Main Rd). Follow 114 South for approximately 6 miles until you enter Newport. Route 114 South then becomes Broadway. Follow Broadway past the Newport Hospital (on the left). After a few blocks, you will see a Dunkin Donuts on the left. The first left hand turn after that is Ayrault St. Take your first left on Ayrault Street and follow to the 1st stop sign and turn right onto Kay St. Follow Kay St. to the traffic light and Hotel Viking is located straight through the intersection.
